Mirurgia Aguilar Velázquez is a Geological Engineer (2004) and Coordinator of the Environmental Network at the University of Havana. She holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Education (2013) and a PhD in Geological Sciences from the University of Moa, with a dissertation on subsidence risk assessment in karst terrains (Sierra de Cubitas case study). She has been an Associate Professor since 2016 and is an active member of several international networks focused on environmental sustainability, management, and circular economy.
Her main research areas include geology, stratigraphy, tectonics, geomorphology, hydrogeology, rock and soil mechanics, disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, carbon footprint assessment, environmental management, circular economy, and geomatics using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
She coordinates postgraduate and master’s programs in environmental management and leads international projects and events on environmental education. Aguilar has published several works on climate change and carbon footprint and has participated in major international conferences across Europe and Latin America.
In recognition of her work, she received the Emerging Scholar Award (University of Vienna, 2024).
