Canada: Call for Scholarships 2022-2023

The Canadian Confederation and Saint-Francis-Xavier University are launching a call for applications for scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year. These scholarships are for nationals of developing countries, third world countries and European countries. The scholarships cover the period of a training cycle of a maximum of six (06) semesters and the travel costs, i.e. the round-trip plane ticket (Pays de Provence-Canada) is payable. of the Canadian Confederation.

The prerequisite for the application is:
-Be a maximum of 18 to 55 years old

  • understand and speak correctly one of the languages of instruction in Canada (Spanish, English, German, Italian and French)
  • withdraw from Saint-Francis-Xavier University in Canada, the scholarship application form via the email address: stfx_ca@ik.me

Centr’ERE celebrates the World EE Day

From October 5 to 14, 2022, Centr’ERE the Center for Research in Education and Training relating to the Environment and Eco-citizenship at UQAM invites you to the Environmental Education Days!

These Days offer a program rich in spaces for sharing, reflection and discussion. Highly topical subjects will be addressed such as the development of public policies supporting EE, the current relevance of critical pedagogy, the challenges of political education with regard to environmental issues and learning at the heart of social mobilizations. concerned about extractive expansion, particularly in indigenous territories.

Call for interview with Prairie Climate Center

The Prairie Climate Center  is looking for teachers from all over Canada and who teaches every age group to do an online interview about their online resource, Climate Atlas of Canada.

The interview will last about 1 hour. No previous experience with Climate Atlas of Canada is required. You will be asked about the browsing experience on their site to give a  feedback in real time.

Subscribe now to EECOM 2021

Early registration is now open for EECOM2021.  This year, for the first time the largest National Environmental Education conference in Canada will take place online from 21-24 April 2021.

Teachers, students, classes, community organizations and parents will be welcomed. The Conference will begin on April 21 with a research symposium with some of the most eminent researchers and teachers in Canada and around the world. The following 3 days there will be dynamic sessions and workshops focused on four themes: the city as a classroom, indigenous education, eco-justice education and education relating to water.

There will be 3 opening presentations: Larissa Crawford on Earth Day, indigenous artists Christi Belcourt and Isaac Murdoch and Julian Agyeman on climate justice and more than 100 presenters over more than 70 sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to socialize with other members of EECOM community during the “Green Night”.

Celebrating the World EE Day 2020, experiences and activities all around the world

The third edition of the World Environmental Education Day took place from 14 to 26 October 2020.  The Weec Network invited all the stakeholders of the environmental education to join the World Environmental Education Day organising special events to highlight the importance of environmental educational actions all over the world.

The aim of EE Day is to focus on the complexity of the challenges in a world where everything is ever more interconnected. Several associations, environmental education centres, schools and institutions sent us information about their events in 2020. We would like to thank all those who wanted to promote environmental education this year, despite the pandemic.

Here we present a selection of interesting case histories.

 

Bénin
Cercle de Recherche pour l’Identification et la Promotion des Alternatives du Développement Durable (CRIPADD)

CRIPADD is convinced that an environmental education program for children is essential to raise environmental awareness. It is with this in mind that they initiated an animation campaign for the benefit of schoolchildren at the public primary school of Hio. It will focus on environmental themes drawn from their environment.

This initiative was set up after the momentous decision to ban mangrove cutting in Avlékété, an area of ​​impressive biodiversity, but overexploited. However, the decision of environmental protection is putting many families in economic difficulty.

 

Bhutan
Royal Education Council

Environmental education is one of the national priorities towards achieving the goals of Gross National Happiness. To this effect, Environmental Science for classes 9 to 12 was introduced as optional subject with the aim of developing youths who are in peace and harmony with the tangible and intangible environment. As a consequence, nature is used sustainably for the wellbeing of people and the nature.

Revue Éducation relative à l’environnement

The Revue Éducation relative à l’environnement, part of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), has set up a Google discussion group (mailing list) concerning the field of Environmental Education. In this group, members can exchange information (announcements of colloquia, seminars or webinars; publications; call for contributions for an event; call for publication; links to a website or webpage, etc.), ask subscribers research questions on the subject of the list, help other subscribers by answering the questions asked, receive information… as long as it is in the field of Environmental Education. The language used by this group is French. This list is moderated and you will have the possibility to unsubscribe at any time.

Fundación Cosmos

Fundación Cosmos manages the Rio Maipo Wetland Nature Sanctuary located on the central coast of Chile. This is one of the most important coastal wetlands in the area, both because it is home to more than 180 species of birds, and because of the environmental services it provides to local communities and the ecosystem in general. However, it is not free from threats and factors that deteriorate it and affect its biodiversity, such as the presence and accumulation of rubbish that reaches it through high tides or the flooding of the Maipo River. To commemorate World Environmental Education Day, they have organised a community rubbish clean-up, which is more important than ever, given the arrival of migratory birds in the wetland. Through the clean-up, the Fudación generates awareness about the origin of the rubbish and the possible destiny of the waste that we all produce, encouraging a change in behaviour with respect to it.

Association Centre de découverte du son

The Association Centre de découverte du son will organize a nature outing: “Sons Buissonniers”. Walks will be organised in search of musical instruments that nature can offer. Magical moments where a blade of grass turns into a whistle, fruit into percussion. Then pupils will discover how to manipulate and have fun with these sound objects.

Litt’Obs

Litt’Obs will organise an educational discovery of rays and sharks with a school public as part of the Festival Baie des Sciences in St-Brieuc, on 14th of October.

Department of Education Studies at University of Bologna

An informal group of professor and students engaged on environmental education is organizing a web event (in Italian) addressed to students of the Department of Education Studies at University of Bologna, on the 16 October, 11 am-1 pm.

“MAREARTE” Project, travelling exhibition

The “MareArte” project was born from an idea of the artist Diego Racconi as a collective of small paintings by international artists, received through the postal system. The theme of the works develops on the relationship between Man and the Sea, transforming art into a valid tool of awareness, through which to send a message to the community, stimulating virtuous behaviour and raising awareness of respect for the environment. The large participation of the artists with their personal postcards led to the development of the initiative by organizing a traveling collective exhibition, in which some specific works created by the artist Diego Racconi are also presented for a charity action in support of reality. that deal with the recovery of marine animals. The exhibition is structured and proposed thanks to the collaboration of various institutional bodies involving them for the promotion of the initiative in their own territory and is sent through the postal system from location to location in the various destinations, through a tour and a travel route using the postal system. The initiative focuses on environmental sustainability issues and for this reason the invitation to participate in the initiative is also extended to children, precisely to involve the new generations on ecological environmental issues and sustainability objectives. All the works received will be collected at the end of the exhibition in an artist’s book and will therefore not be returned. The Exibition is now hosted at the Museo Barca Lariana (MBL) – Pianello del Lario, Como, Italy

Institute of People and Nature (IPN)

The Institute of People and Nature (IPN) will take part at the celebration of the World Environmental Education Day with a webinar on “Environmental Education in Madagascar from 1985 to 2020: background and trends”. The main objective is to inform the audience about the EE actions taken in Madagascar Island since the start in 1985, their impacts and current trends. The target groups are: Members of IPN group (217 members from Malagasy public and private Universities); and Environmental Education, Conservation and Sustainable Development professionals, University students worldwide interested in EE and environment-related issues in Madagascar. It will take place on 14th October at 12:00 GMT. The webinar will be conducted in French. The speaker is Andrianambinintsoa RAKOTOMALALA (Environmental Educator – Sociolinguist, Faculty of Science, University of Toliara, MADAGASCAR)

The Sustainable Development Youth Leaders Education program will develop knowledge, skills and attitudes about sustainability. This program not only increases knowledge and awareness, but also improves skills and enables individuals to make more informed decisions about the environment.

There are a few methodologies that will create a solution-oriented project approach to many issues such as global climate change, gender equality, disruption of ecological balance, separation of biodiversity, ending hunger and poverty, sustainability cities, clean and sustainability energy, life in water. They will find knowledge to improve have academic and personal skills through organizational skills, speaking in front of the community, speaking a speech, preparing a project report.

National Network of Environmental Education for Sustainable Human Development of Uruguay (RENEA), Montevideo

From 5 to 7 November, a virtual meeting will set up. Experts from all over the region are invited to present their experiences and reflections on Latin American environmental education. Environmental education for sustainable human development implies an ethical, political and social commitment in a given time and space with the formation of a citizenship committed to participating democratically in decision-making and the execution of actions aimed at a socially equitable development, supportive and balanced between human needs and environmental care. In this very special year, environmental educators have faced new challenges and generated new learnings. It is more than ever a good time to meet, this time virtually, to continue the tradition of reflecting and building environmental education together.

California Institute of Environmental Design and Management (CIEDM)

CIEDM will support WEED2020 by participating in the global campaign with following actions:

1. Raise public awareness of WEED2020 by spreading its campaign messages through its social medias, along with those of other environmental awareness events in and around October 14-25, such as Earth Science Week, International Day for Disaster Reduction, and Image a Day without Water;

2. Maintain and enhance through physical works the ecological and environmental services of the homestead pocket forest at Arcadia EcoHome as a registered pollinator site, a certified wildlife habitat, a certified pollinator habitat, and a verified ocean friendly garden.

We invite you to sign our campaign on Change to ask the United Nations, institutions, private and public organizations of five continents, to recognize and celebrate every year, on October 14th, the World Environmental Education Day.

Possibility of collaboration with Canadian environmental education journal

Each year, the journal “Éducation relative à l’environnement : Regards – Recherches – Réflexions” publishes an issue outside the theme, under the responsibility of the Center for Research in Education and Training relating to the Environment and Eco-Citizenship (UQAM). This issue of the journal will be entirely made up of texts submitted spontaneously to the journal. Articles received before June 1, 2020 will be posted on the journal’s website for the month of January 2021. Be sure to visit the publication guidelines before submitting your proposal.

The journal “Éducation relative à l’environnement : Regards – Recherches – Réflexions” updates its list of potential French-speaking experts. Peer evaluation (revision work) corresponds to a process of selecting the manuscripts to be published in the journal and accompanying the authors to improve their text. This evaluation task is unpaid. However, it offers the opportunity to take a critical look at research articles in its field. In addition, each assessor receives an official certificate of their contribution to the review. Also, the names, first names and home institutions of all the evaluators are presented on the journal’s website, in the “Production credits” section of the issue concerned. If this prospect of collaboration interests you, do not hesitate to send us the following information: name, surname, home institution and function, Email address, fields of intervention, activities and areas of expertise, reference of your latest publications – with internet link if applicable. If your application is successful, you will receive an email confirming that you are included in the list of potential evaluating experts.

One of its missions is to meet the needs of documentary resources. Quebec coalition for environmental education and ecocitizenship

The Coalition Education – Environment – Ecocitizenship is a group of organizations and individuals mobilized to stimulate the institutionalization and the full deployment of an environmental and eco-citizenship education in the Quebec society, both in communities formal education than in non-formal educational contexts.
This strategy is the result of the work of a collective of actors from 57 institutions and organizations of our educational society, aware of the need to vigorously promote the role of environmental education and eco-citizenship in Quebec.
The Coalition was structured within the framework of the work of a partnership platform set up by the research center in education and training related to the environment and eco-citizenship of UQAM. In order to contribute to the vast socio-ecological transformation that is required in our society, the Coalition pursues a twofold mission:
– Promote the advancement of environmental education and eco-citizenship in Quebec by bringing together the actors of the various sectors concerned and by democratically developing a concerted action to this end.
– Promoting the adoption and implementation of a Québec Environmental Education Strategy in the public space and with the various decision-making bodies in the fields of education, the environment and associated fields and eco-citizenship, which is reflected in public policy elements, accompanied by structuring action plans.

Given the collective and political nature of the mission, objectives and actions of the Coalition, the following principles must be respected:
– Adopt a democratic, coherent and concerted mode of operation; in this sense, any initiative taken on behalf of the Coalition should be shared, discussed and validated by the Coordination Committee before being carried out;
– Recognize and respect the right of dissent or reserve for certain actions or speeches that will not result in consensus; each initiative of the Coalition will result in a consultation of members to this effect;
– When speaking publicly on behalf of the Coalition, ensure that the statements in the Strategy are properly expressed, and that the Coalition’s approach is not partisan.

9th WEEC, the abstract book is now available for free

The 9weec_Abstract_ Book presents the contents of the World Environmental Education Congress held in Vancouver (Canada) in September 2017.
A total of 736 abstracts were submitted to the abstract submission system in English, French and Spanish.
Abstracts were submitted in 1 of 14 following strands. Early Childhood Education and EE; Place-based Education and Local Outdoor Learning; Architecture and Green Design; Arts Based Approaches in EE; Agriculture and Garden-Based Learning; Global and Cultural Diversity in EE; Urban Eco-systems;  Environmental Communication (and Uncertainty); Indigenous Knowledge and EE; Ethics Lead Learning and Sustainability; Social Responsibility and Agency/Activism; Nature as Teacher / Nature as Researcher; Global Policy and Environmental Education; Perspectives, Challenges and Innovation in Research.
The congress allowed up to 14 parallel sessions as the Local Organizing Committee envisioned a room/home dedicated for each of the 14 strands. The majority of presentations was allocated to interactive poster sessions and discouraged the traditional PowerPoint presentations.
One of the goals of the congress was to encourage as much interaction and discussion amongst the delegates as possible and move away from the hierarchical oral presentations.
Upon review by the Local Organizing Committee as well as the Socio-Scientific Committee, there were a total of 259 interactive poster presentations, 26 novel format presentations, 43 paper presentations, 152 roundtable presentations, and 2 symposia confirmed for the congress.

64 countries were represented at WEEC 2017.

The Walking Curriculum, a new tool for Environmental Education

The Walking Curriculum is an innovative interdisciplinary resource for educators K-12 who want to take student learning outside school walls. Walking Curriculum activities can be used in any context to develop students’ Sense of Place and to enrich their understanding of curricular topics. Based on principles of Imaginative Ecological Education, the 60 easy-to-use walking-focused activities in this resource are designed to engage students’ emotions and imaginations with their local natural and cultural communities, to broaden their awareness of the particularities of Place, and to evoke their sense of wonder in learning. Through walking we can enrich our students’ sense-making abilities, we can enhance their very being and, as we go, we can seed with meaning the contexts in which they spend so many hours learning.

In the 60 walks described in this resource you will see a variety of themes, perspectives, and motivations. For example, students may be asked to find different things (such as shapes, spaces or lines, evidence of growth or change, “the best” hiding places), to change perspectives (imagine being a beetle, a detective, or a visitor from outer space), to encounter the world differently (emphasizing one sense over another or moving through space differently), to seek evidence of human-nature relationships, to identify patterns, or to locate natural or human systems in action. In all cases, the intent is to broaden their  awareness of the particularities of Place. The activities are designed to: engage the body, emotions, and imagination in ways that can increase students’ familiarity with the local natural context in which they go to school; increase students’ attention to detail and their attunement with Place; connect Place-based learning activities with cross-curricular goals; and serve as examples for your own, Place-inspired teaching ideas.

Overview: Introductory chapters provide a rationale for the Walking Curriculum and describe the underlying educational philosophy it reflects. Detail is provided so you can prepare to use the resource as well as extend and enrich your students’ learning. The walks themselves are divided into three sets: The 30 walks are paired with guiding questions and an imaginative activity or prompt to engage students’ emotions. These are the easiest walks for you to employ; they require little direct teaching or guidance ahead of time. They are readily adaptable for students of all ages. The second set contains 15 walks requiring some direct instruction and guidance; they will work better if they are properly introduced and contextualized. The final set of 15 walks is specifically designed for High School students and reflects interdisciplinary curricular outcomes.

About The Author

Dr. Gillian Judson is a member of the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University in B.C., Canada, one of the directors of the Imaginative Education Research Group (IERG), and coordinator of Imaginative Ecological Education initiatives. Her work is primarily concerned with the role of imagination in learning (PreK-Higher Education). As an educational consultant she explores imagination in the context of ecological education, educational program design, higher education, educational change, educational leadership, and Museum Education. She has written two books on Imaginative Ecological Education: Engaging Imagination In Ecological Education: Practical Strategies For Teaching (UBC Press; 2015) and A New Approach To Ecological Education: Engaging Students’ Imaginations In Their World (Peter Lang, 2010).
